Allergies are caused when the body is hypersensitive to foreign substances like food, pollen, dust, and animal dander. Common allergy symptoms include headaches, sinus congestion, sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and irritation on the roof of the mouth.
Homeopathic remedies work to strengthen the body’s defense systems and immunity to allergies instead of assuming the allergy trigger needs to be avoided. It is important to note that homeopathic treatments to not fully ‘cure’ allergies.
Homeopathic remedies can be used to treat the acute symptoms of allergies without the same side effects as traditional treatments like antihistamines, steroids, and desensitization shots. Homeopaths sometimes use the substance a patient is allergic to in treatments, but in much smaller quantities than regular desensitization shots.
Homeopaths believe that directly suppressing symptoms of the skin and mucous membranes can lead to more severe conditions, like asthma. In these cases, allergies, skin problems, and asthma are interconnected.
Here are some common homeopathic treatments for allergies and the specific symptoms that they target:
Allium Cepa (the common onion) is a well-known homeopathic treatment for allergies that affect the respiratory system. In small doses, Allium Cepa helps ease the symptoms of patients who suffer from burning nasal discharge and red, watery eyes. Frequent sneezing and headaches are other symptoms that accompany these types of allergies. The patient’s symptoms are worse indoors and improve in the cool open air.
Arsenicum Album (arsenic) is effective in minute doses for treating allergies that are characterized by burning tears, sneezing, and nasal discharge. These symptoms are generally worse on the right side of the body and after midnight. Since these symptoms are worse at night, they tend to be accompanied by anxiety and restlessness. Warm rooms typically make these patients symptoms feel better, whereas wet weather and weather changes tend to exacerbate their symptoms.
Euphrasia (eyebright) is used to treat allergies characterized by heavy burning tears that cause the eyes to itch. These patients suffer from watery nasal discharge that does not burn, the opposite of patients who need to be treated with Allium Cepa. These allergies tend to be worse at night unless it is accompanied by coughing. Staying in a dark room can help ease symptoms, whereas sunlight and the wind aggravate symptoms in these patients.
Arundo (giant cane) is a good homeopathic treatment for patients who suffer from frequent sneezing and loss of smell. The roof of the mouth and nose becomes very itchy, while the eyes and ear canals not only itch but also burn.
Nux Vomica (strychnine tree) is used to treat allergies whose primary symptoms are prolonged sneezing and nasal discharge during the day. At night, these patients experience sinus congestion that tends to switch between nostrils, often causing restlessness and irritability. Itching of the throat is also common. For these patients, symptoms can be worse after eating and in open air that is cool or windy. Warm drinks, rest, and moist air help alleviate these symptoms.
